Windows File Explorer

Overview

In order for you to receive credit for the assignments you complete in this class you need to upload your files to the Student Web server so that your instructor can review them and give you credit for your hard work. If you are not using Visual Studio to do this with, or another Web development tool which has a built-in FTP client or even just a basic code editor, you will need to use a built-in or separate File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program to upload your files to the Student Web server. This tutorial will cover the step-by-step process of publishing the files from your computer to the Student Web server using any the Windows File Explorer FTP client program.

Introduction

If you are using a PC that runs either the XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8 or 10 operating systems (not including Windows 8 or 10 RT versions [on Windows tablets, phones, and some Surface computers mainly]) then you can use the Windows File Explorer (formerly Windows Explorer) to transfer your files to the Student Web server.

Download Student Data Files to Your Computer

If you haven't done so already, go to the Resources page for your course and download the Student Data files to your computer. To make things easy on yourself, you should save the zip file you are downloading into a folder named My Websites, which should be located in the My Documents folder on your computer. Once the zip file has downloaded, right click on the file and from the context menu choose "Extract All", a new unzipped folder displaying your course number will appear. Inside of that folder will be all of the files you need to complete the step-by-step tutorials in your textbook, and the Review assignment at the end of each tutorial.

Understanding the Difference Between Internet Explorer and Windows File Explorer

It is important for PC users to understand that their is a difference between Windows File Explorer and Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is your Web browser used for cruising the Internet. Depending on the version of Internet Explorer you have, most likely it will NOT work for uploading files to the Student Web server. You need to use Windows File Explorer for that purpose. Windows File Explorer is the program you use when you open My Computer or click on the folder icon in your Task bar. Windows Explorer iconIf you are unsure of how to open Windows File Explorer, simply right-click on the Start button or any folder on your desktop or anywhere on your computer, from the context menu that pops up choose File Explorer. The window that opens is the Windows File Explorer program.

Logging On to the Student FTP/Web Server

FTP logon dialog box.

Once the Student Web server's Log On As dialog box appears you will need to type in your username and password. Your username for this class is your first initial + your last name. In the case of Bill Bennett the username would be "bbennett". The password is your MSJC email address without the "@student.msjc.edu" added. If my email address was bbennett123@student.msjc.edu, then my password would be "bbennett123". Passwords are case-sensitive and should be all lowercase.

Copying Files to the Student FTP/Web Server

Dragging and dropping files to from the student computer to the FTP.Web server.

Once you are connected to the Student Web server, the process of copying files to the Student Web server is as simple as dragging and dropping your files, or in this case your RA folder, from your computer to the Student Web server. You'll notice by looking at the graphic on the right, that your local files, that is to say the files and folders on your computer, are in the tree hierarchy in the left pane of Windows Explorer, and any files or folders you drag and drop into the right pane of Windows Explorer will be copied to your folder on the Student Web server.

Emailing Your Assignment URL to Your Instructor

Each time you have completed a Review Assignment (RA) you will publish the Review Assignment folder, containing all of the files necessary to view your Web page, to the Student Web server. After you have completed that step there is just one more step before your instructor can grade your assignment, you need to send the instructor a link to your review assignment via email. If you are not already familiar with how to complete this step, you can learn how by reading the URLs tutorial.

Remember to ALWAYS type your course #, section #, and RA# in the Subject of your email when submitting Review Assignment URLs to your instructor for scoring.
