Case Study 5
Using FTP, PDFs, Ping, and TraceRoute

You are an IT consultant and have been hired by Marcus Lange the President of a new Internet-based company. Mr. Lange represents a group of investors who are developing an Internet-based TV station called "MSJC TV". You have been asked to help test and resolve Internet connectivity problems that the station is experiencing at various times of the day. Mr. Lange has left instructions for you on their FTP server (named: ftp.msjctv.com) in a PDF file. You will need to use FTP to download the PDF file to your computer.
Once you've downloaded the PDF file to your computer you will need to use Acrobat Reader 6.0 or greater to read the information provided in the PDF file. Follow the instructions in the PDF file.
- PC Users: View the two videos listed below in the left column for help on completing the assigned tasks.
- MAC Users: View the two videos listed below in the
right column and the MAC specific Skills Lesson in the right column for help on completing the assigned tasks.
Ping/TraceRoute Demo [Download] (34.3 MB)
This video demonstrates how to use the PING utility to troubleshoot network connectivity problems. Also, how to use the Trace Route utility to view the names and IP Addresses of the routers a message passes through while traveling from sender to destination.
If you are a MAC user, view the videos "Using Windows Explorer as an FTP Client" and "Ping/TraceRoute Demo" by clicking on the links at the bottom of the left-hand column (under Viewing Instructions). Then review the Skills Lesson below (the link with the Apple icon) to learn how to locate and use PING and TraceRoute on your MAC computer.
Since MACs don't come with an FTP client and Apple no longer offers Classic FTP as a free download, you'll need to search the Internet for a free downloadable FTP program for Mac.
Once you have completed all of the lessons above, you should be ready to complete the CS5 worksheet which you will find by clicking on the Goto Worksheet button below. TIP! You might want to print out this worksheet in advance of beginning your assigned tasks.
