A division of the Department Of Defense (DOD). In 1969 the DOD established the DOD Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) which was later shortened to ARPA. DARPA was responsible for developing the ARPANET. Designed to provide high-speed communications links using packet-switching networks to government agencies, universities and corporations. Since 1969, ARPANET has grown into a worldwide community of networks known as the Internet.
